Thirty-first: the precept against failing to redeem. Seeing an image of a Buddha or bodhisattva being sold and failing to redeem it is an extreme humiliation, not the conduct of a mahāsattva. One should redeem it according to one's capability; failing to do so constitutes an offense, hence it was instituted. It is the same for the seven assemblies; Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna do not fully share it. Bodhisattvas must redeem them; if a śrāvaka sees their parents and does not redeem them, they commit an offense of the seventh category, but no prohibition is seen regarding scriptures or images. The narrative of events has three parts: First, the person capable of selling, meaning robbers. What is sold is the images of Buddhas and bodhisattvas; these are treated like parents because of great compassion. From "Yet a bodhisattva..." onward is the third, properly explaining that one should redeem them.
