Forty-first, the precept against acting as a preceptor for personal gain: Lacking real understanding within and acting for fame and gain without, recklessly forcing oneself to do so brings the harm of misleading others; hence it is established. It applies to the two monastic assemblies; it is not prescribed in both the Great and Small. The three [novice] assemblies and the householders lack the status of a preceptor and are not bound. The account of the matter has three stages: First, clarifying what must be understood. It is by understanding this that one is qualified to be a preceptor; as a concomitant rule, not understanding it constitutes an offense. Inquiring into impediments to the path: impediments to the path are three: 1. the seven cardinal transgressions, 2. the ten major precepts, 3. the forty-eight minor precepts. Each of these three matters must be thoroughly understood; one must not forcefully impose the guilt of receiving them upon those who do not wish to receive them. From "If one does not understand the Mahāyāna" below, second, lack of understanding: acting as a preceptor without understanding this is also a concomitant rule. From "Yet a bodhisattva" below, third, citing the transgression and concluding the offense.
