初釋名者，先釋總名，謂一、周圓數，二、五稱。十波羅夷者，此云他勝處，略有三釋：一、約法，謂是佛弟子，以所持佛戒為自，非毀佛戒為他。若專精不犯，則自勝於他；若破其根本，即他勝於自。以戒為學處，持犯所依，故云處也。二、約業，謂魔業為他。三、約報，謂墮不如意處為他。並可知。此從數義以彰名，即帶數釋。二、別名，如下釋。

First, explaining the names: first explaining the general name, namely, first, a complete number, and second, five designations. As for the "ten pārājikas," here translated as "defeat" (pārājika), there are briefly three explanations: First, in terms of phenomena: this means that as a disciple of the Buddha, taking the Buddha's precepts that one upholds as self, and defaming the Buddha's precepts as other, if one is dedicated and pure without transgressing, then the self defeats the other; if one breaks their foundation, then the other defeats the self. Because precepts are training rules (śikṣāpada) upon which upholding and transgressing rely, it is called a "site" (pada/deśa). Second, in terms of karma: this means that the karma of Māra is other. Third, in terms of retribution: this means that falling into undesirable places is other. All of these may be understood. This establishes the name based on the meaning of the number; that is, an explanation that includes a number. Second, the specific names are explained below.
