Seventh, regarding the karma of theft, first, according to the Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā and the Abhidharmasamuccaya, etc., there are three kinds of fruition: 1. Vipāka-phala (maturation fruition): falling into the three evil destinies to undergo intense suffering. 2. Niṣyanda-phala (concordant fruition): suffering a lack of wealth among humans, or not having mastery over wealth. 3. Adhipati-phala (dominant fruition): the external crops encountering frost, hail, and the like. Second, according to the fourth fascicle of the Upāsakaśīla Sūtra, it says: "If a person delights in stealing, this person will also obtain ugly complexion, feeble strength, bad repute, and a short lifespan; their wealth will dwindle, their family and kin will be separated; others will suspect them when they lose possessions; though they show affection to others, people will not trust them; they will constantly be rebuked in places by worthy sages—this is called the fruit of evil karma in the present life. After casting off this body, they enter into the hells, where they obtain ugly complexion, feeble strength, bad repute, suffer the torment of hunger and thirst, and undergo a long lifespan—this is called the fruit of evil karma in future lives. If they obtain a human body, they will be impoverished in wealth and jewels; even if they gain [wealth], it is immediately lost; they will not be loved or thought of by their parents, brothers, wives, and children; their bodies will constantly undergo suffering and their minds harbour grief and distress. By the force of the causes and conditions of this one evil person, whatever all people dare to eat will not yield bodily complexion or strength—the evil fruit of this person spreads calamity to the ten thousand people." Third, according to the thirteenth fascicle of the Dazhidulun, it says: "As the Buddha said, taking what is not given has ten faults. What are the ten? First, the owner of the object is constantly angry. Second, people are suspicious. Third, one behaves and schemes at improper times. Fourth, one bands together with evil persons and stays far from the worthy and good. Fifth, one destroys good roots. Sixth, one commits offenses against the authorities. Seventh, one's property and goods are confiscated. Eighth, one plants the karmic causes and conditions of poverty. Ninth, upon death, one enters the hells. Tenth, if one emerges as a human, one diligently and painfully seeks wealth, yet it is shared by the five houses: whether bandits, or water, or fire, or kings, or use by an unloved son, down to losing it through burial and hiding."
