3.50

初、制意者，略由四意：一、乖正行故。菩薩理宜密行內蘊，讚揚他德，攬曲向已，推直與人，何容反揚自德，非理毀他？失行之甚，故須制也。二、成大損故。謂自讚乃耗減善根，毀他便招罪業。三、自讚壞他信心，毀他便不受化。四、誤累眾生故。謂他人倣習，失善成惡，損物之甚，故宜制也。

First, regarding the intent behind the regulation, it is briefly based on four intentions: 1. Because it goes against correct practice. In principle, a bodhisattva should cultivate inner virtue in secret, praise the merits of others, take faults upon oneself, and ascribe what is right to others. How could one conversely praise one's own virtues and deprecate others contrary to principle? Because this is an extreme failure of practice, it must be regulated. 2. Because it causes great harm. Namely, praising oneself depletes one's roots of goodness, and deprecating others incurs offensive karma. 3. Praising oneself destroys others' faith, and deprecating others makes them unreceptive to being transformed. 4. Because it misleads and burdens sentient beings. Namely, others emulate this practice, losing goodness and creating evil; because it causes great harm to beings, it is appropriate to regulate it.
