3.51

第二、釋名者，謂無德自揚為讚，越過辱他為毀。又顯揚己德為自讚，恥辱有德名毀他。防治此失，故稱為戒。

Second, regarding the explanation of the name: promoting oneself when lacking virtue is called "praise"; humiliating another beyond their actual faults is called "deprecation." Moreover, manifesting and publicizing one's own virtues is "praise of oneself," and shaming those who possess virtue is called "deprecation of others." Preventing and guarding against this failure is therefore called a "precept."
