4.40

三、數類者，通論此篇。此篇類有十：一、若依《瑜伽》，有四十四種輕戒。二、若依《地持》、《善戒經》，雖有少增減，大同《瑜伽》。已上多分是出家戒相。三、依《菩薩內戒經》，四十二種。四、依《善生經》，除六重外，別有二十八。五、依《方等經》，除二十四種戒外，別更有五五二十五種，制不應作。已上多分是在家戒。六、依此經大數，有四十八種。七、若尋此文細內，或有一戒中有多種戒，總論向將百種。已上通道俗戒。八、或八萬種，如下文列〈八萬威儀品〉中說。九、或十萬種，如梁論引《毘奈耶瞿沙羅經》說菩薩戒有十萬種差別。十、戒塵沙，如《智論》中略有八萬，廣有塵沙等數。如是等皆此類也。

Third, number and categories: discussing this section comprehensively, this section has ten categories: 1. according to the Yogācārabhūmi, there are forty-four types of minor precepts; 2. according to the Dichi and Shanjie jing, although there are minor additions and omissions, they largely agree with the Yogācārabhūmi; the above are mostly precept characteristics for the ordained; 3. according to the Bodhisattva Internal Precept Sūtra, forty-two types; 4. according to the Shansheng jing, aside from the six major ones, there are separately twenty-eight; 5. according to the Fangdeng jing, aside from the twenty-four precepts, there are separately five times five, or twenty-five types instituted that should not be done; the above are mostly precepts for the laity; 6. according to the general count of this sūtra, there are forty-eight types; 7. if one closely examines within this text, in one precept there may be multiple precepts, totaling nearly a hundred types; the above apply commonly to both monastics and laity; 8. or eighty thousand types, as stated below in the listed "Chapter on the Eighty Thousand Deportments"; 9. or one hundred thousand types, as the Liang Treatise cites the Vinayaghoṣila Sūtra stating that the bodhisattva precepts have one hundred thousand distinct types; 10. precepts as numerous as dust and sand, as in the Dazhidulun, which has eighty thousand in brief and numbers like dust and sand in extensive. Such are all of this category.
