五、闕緣者，闕初緣得重方便，以雖有慈心而不救故。闕第二緣有二義：一、總無罪，以不見人殺無可救故；二、得重方便，以見苦眾生而不救故。闕第三緣亦有二義：一、輕方便，以雖無慈心而不捨救故；二、王力自在救不得，故無罪也。闕第四緣得重方便，以命不斷非由救故。餘義准之。

Fifth, regarding lacking conditions: lacking the first condition incurs a major preparatory offense, because although one has a compassionate mind, one does not save them. Lacking the second condition has two meanings: 1. Entirely no offense, because not seeing anyone killing, there was nothing to save; 2. Incurring a major preparatory offense, because seeing suffering sentient beings, one does not rescue them. Lacking the third condition also has two meanings: 1. A minor preparatory offense, because although one lacks a compassionate mind, one does not abandon saving them; 2. Because the sovereign power of a king is unimpeded and one cannot save them, there is no offense. Lacking the fourth condition incurs a major preparatory offense, because their life not ending was not due to one's rescue. Other meanings may be inferred from this.
