5.30

初、制意者，菩薩以大悲為體，拔苦為用，何容見病而不瞻救？故須制也。又若能禁心看病，令其得差，即是絕命，故須制也。又如來大聖，尚躬瞻病苦，況其餘類而不瞻救？

First, regarding the intention of its establishment: the bodhisattva takes great compassion as the essence and the elimination of suffering as the function; how could they allow seeing sickness without attending to and saving them? Therefore it had to be established. Furthermore, if one can restrain the mind and nurse the sick, causing them to recover, that is [saving them from] the end of life; therefore it had to be established. Furthermore, if the Tathāgata, the Great Sage, still personally attended to the sick and suffering, how much more so should the rest not attend to and save them?
