Eighth, explaining the text: Again there are three parts: first, citing the fault; second, the explicit prohibition; third, the adjudication of the offense. In the first part, there are four phrases: 1. The category of trading free persons; 2. Trading male and female slaves; 3. Regarding "six kinds of livestock," the Zhouli says that cattle, horses, dogs, sheep, pigs, and chickens constitute the six; in principle this truly applies to all animals, none of which may be traded. Here it simply says "vessels for corpses," which means coffins, outer coffins, hearses, and the like; in all cases it incurs an offense, because this is the livelihood of a caṇḍāla. Second, from "must not even [do it oneself]..." onward is the explicit prohibition. Neither oneself nor another should do it; but among the two benefits, a bodhisattva regards benefiting others as foremost, and therefore cites oneself to illustrate [not doing it to] others. Third, from "If one intentionally acts..." onward is the violation and adjudication of the offense.
