Eighth, explaining the text: In the text there are four parts: first, transforming them to cultivate merit; second, prescribing lecturing on the Dharma for them; third, rescuing them from their perils; fourth, concluding the offense for violating the prescription. In the first part, teaching and transforming sentient beings to perform six things: first, establishing saṃgha residences; second, constructing meditation huts and so forth in the mountain forests; third, establishing fields and gardens for the Three Jewels; fourth, causing them to build stupas and so forth; fifth, causing them to make places for winter and summer meditation, and so forth; sixth, universally urging the establishment of all places for guidance in spiritual practice, so that all practitioners can rely on them to cultivate the Path. Second, below 'Yet a bodhisattva', prescribing lecturing on the Dharma for them, conferring the Mahāyāna upon them so that they cultivate the great practice. Third, below 'if there is sickness', rescuing them from their perils, in which there are five points. First, rescuing from pain and hardship has four aspects: 1. during illness, 2. when there is peril in the state, 3. when bandits arise on all sides, 4. when pursuing merit on behalf of deceased ancestors; in all these cases one should preach this sūtra and provide vegetarian feasts to seek merit. Second, below 'traveling', rescuing from disasters has five types: 1. when commercial livelihood is unprofitable, 2. fire disasters, 3. water disasters, 4. wind disasters, 5. sea-rākṣasas, meaning that out of fear of these various disasters, one should lecture on this Mahāyāna. Third, below 'even', rescuing from karmic retribution: 'all karmic retributions' can only be rescued by the Mahāyāna. 'The three retributions' are: 1. retribution in the present life, 2. retribution in the next rebirth, 3. retribution in subsequent lives; [the Mahāyāna] eliminates the sins of these three retributions. 'The seven rebellious acts and the eight difficulties' may be understood. Fourth, below 'manacles and fetters', rescuing from the hardship of prison may be understood. Fifth, 'excessive lust', etc., rescues from the hardships of the three poisons and so forth; one should state 'and so forth' to conclude comprehensively the perils above; all equally rely on the preaching of the Mahāyāna to effect rescue. Fourth, below 'Yet a newly learned', the offense is concluded for violating the prescription.
