Ninth, subsuming various sections: there are four [aspects]. First, in terms of the ten unwholesome actions: in revealing the ten precepts, the intention of disparaging is wrong view; the words of disparaging, harsh speech, and alcohol are causes of delusion; disparaging is the fruit of delusion; the remainder are in order, as the other nine should be known. Second, according to the Bodhisattva-śīla Sūtra, renunciant bodhisattvas have eight major [precepts], which are the first four and the latter four here. This is because renunciant bodhisattvas first receive the śrāvaka precepts, possessing the first four major ones, and later receive the bodhisattva precepts, further adding the latter four. Third, according to the Sujāta Sūtra, lay bodhisattvas have six major [precepts], which are the first six here. Fourth, according to the Yogācāra and the Bodhisattvabhūmi, there are four major [precepts], which are the latter four here. Furthermore, the four major precepts of the Hīnayāna are the first four here. Therefore, these precepts universally subsume monastics and laity, fully engaging both Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna; hence they comprise ten.
