Fourth, having the complete conditions: 1. it is alcohol; 2. giving rise to the perception that it is alcohol; 3. being free of severe illness; 4. an offense is committed as soon as one drinks it. Question: in the Hīnayāna Vinaya, drinking alcohol does not depend on perception or doubt; why is there such a perception here? Answer: because alcohol is the source of faults, in that [Vinaya] errors and the like are not excused. Here it is established on the basis of conditions being complete; hence it includes perception. Therefore the text says: 'If a disciple of the Buddha intentionally drinks alcohol.' Since it says 'intentionally drinks,' we clearly know that if it is unintentional, it is not a direct offense.
