Seventh, karmic retribution: briefly explained in ten kinds: 1. rebirth among the hungry ghosts, like the mother of Maudgalyāyana and others; 2. suffering in other destinies, like a mangy jackal having not even a single hair to cover its body; 3. suffering poverty and destitution among humans; 4. dwindling and depleting the good roots of past lives; 5. losing the bodhisattva's dāna-pāramitā; 6. through stinginess with the Dharma, constantly suffering stupidity and delusion life after life. The Sujāta Sūtra states: 'If one gives rise to stinginess toward wealth, Dharma, or food, one should know that this person will receive the retribution of foolishness and poverty for immeasurable lives'; 7. through concealing the Dharma eye, constantly being without eyes; 8. through not giving fearlessness, constantly harboring terror life after life, without a moment of peace; 9. constantly having enemies gain the advantage over oneself; 10. causing the three kinds of giving and the six pāramitās to fail to be accomplished. The rest are as explained elsewhere.
