Hearing on the road and speaking on the way carries the fault of slighting the Dharma; therefore it is prohibited. The seven assemblies share this practice. The text says 'bhikṣu' because a householder acting as a teacher has lesser normative authority; it is prohibited in common across Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna. In the text, 'Constantly practice teaching and transforming, giving rise to a mind of great compassion': teaching and transforming with a compassionate mind consists in benefiting beings; in principle one ought to generate good through solemn reverence, and must not give rise to wrongdoing through flippancy. From 'in the midst of any assembly' downward, it directly clarifies the ritual protocol for expounding the Dharma. Within this there are two: first, clarifying the protocol for expounding the Dharma for white-robed laity; second, distinguishing the protocol for expounding the Dharma for the fourfold assembly. According to the vinaya, when a person lies down while one sits, or when they cover their head or carry a staff, all should be subject to the same prohibition. 'Just as when filial and obedient to parents' means honoring the person. 'Like fire-worshiping brahmins' means esteeming the Dharma.
