The Buddha said: 'Disciples of the Buddha! When about to succeed to the throne of a king, when about to succeed to the position of a wheel-turning king, or when the hundred officials receive their posts, one should first receive the bodhisattva precepts. All spirits and deities will rescue and protect the bodies of the king and the hundred officials, and all Buddhas will rejoice. Having already received the precepts, one should give rise to a filial mind and a respectful mind; seeing a senior elder (thera), upādhyāya, ācārya, great fellow student, one of identical view, or one of identical practice, one should rise to welcome them, prostrate, and inquire after them. If, on the contrary, a bodhisattva gives rise to an arrogant mind, conceited mind, ignorant mind, or angry mind, and does not rise to welcome them, prostrate, and inquire after them, failing in each case to make offerings according to the Dharma, even selling one's own body, country, cities, sons and daughters, seven jewels, and hundreds of possessions to provide for them—if one does not do so, one commits a duṣkṛta offense.'
