Question: How do these seven dharmas constitute the accomplishment of one's own practice? Answer: These seven dharmas are precisely the four stages prior to the bhūmis and the three stages on the bhūmis. First, causing them to attain the stage of the ten faiths, hence called "gathering in." "Gathering in" means causing them to enter the ten faiths. Second, causing them to dwell without distraction is the ten abidings, also called the ten understandings. Third, causing them to take up is cultivating the ten practices; hence cultivation is termed "taking up." Fourth, causing them to attain liberation: when understanding and practice are fully ripened, one certainly attains liberation; this is the ten dedications. Fifth, ascending to the first bhūmi is precisely severing afflictions and realizing the dharmakāya; hence it is called "attaining the counteragents." Sixth is the path of cultivation from the second bhūmi upward; hence it is called "advancing." Seventh, causing them to attain practice without retrogression: from the eighth bhūmi upward one is spared the three retrogressions, up to the Buddha stage which is termed the path of non-learning. Therefore, it is named the accomplishment of one's own practice.
