Eighth, showing peerless bodhi. Once there are those to be transformed, there is the one who transforms; therefore, the attainment of the fruit of bodhi is explained next. There are the three vehicles' bodhi; the Buddha's bodhi is the most supreme among the other two bodhis; hence it is called peerless. Within the Buddha's bodhi there are five kinds: first, the bodhi of generating the aspiration; second, the bodhi of subduing the mind; third, the bodhi of clarifying the mind; fourth, the bodhi of emerging and arriving; fifth, peerless bodhi. Now it explains the fifth bodhi; hence it is called peerless bodhi. This text explains the passage on peerless bodhi in the Lifespan Chapter. In general it explains two matters: first, it explains the three kinds of bodhi; second, it explains the three phrases "originally practicing the bodhisattva path" and so forth. In total it explains six phrases of the sūtra text. Explaining the three bodhis comprises three: first, explaining the nirmāṇakāya bodhi; second, explaining the saṃbhogakāya bodhi; third, explaining the dharmakāya bodhi. If viewed in terms of the sequence of cultivation and practice, the dharmakāya is explained first, because the dharmakāya is the naturally abiding buddha-nature. Fundamentally having buddha-nature, it is for this reason that the dharmakāya is explained first; because there is buddha-nature, the causal practices are fulfilled. The manifestation of the buddha-nature is designated saṃbhogakāya bodhi. Once one's own virtues are accomplished, next is the transformation of beings, hence there is nirmāṇakāya bodhi. Now, explaining the sequence of the teaching gate: Śākyamuni's eight phases of achieving the Way showed the attainment of buddhahood at Gayā; hence we know the nirmāṇakāya bodhi. This nirmāṇakāya is due to the saṃbhogakāya; next is explained saṃbhogakāya bodhi. The saṃbhogakāya is due to the dharmakāya; next is explained dharmakāya-buddha bodhi. Within this there are two: first, stating peerless bodhi, generally explaining the three kinds of bodhi.
