Having completely severed all afflictions within the Hīnayāna, they are called "persons without defilements." Yet looking toward the Mahāyāna, they still have afflictions, and being defiled by the afflictions of the Mahāyāna, they are called "defiled." Having not yet attained the ultimate, they claim to be ultimate; elevating themselves with this, it is called "arrogance."
