2.126

Question: When 'the purity of sentient beings' is mentioned, that refers to Buddhas and bodhisattvas. Are those humans and devas [in that land] counted in this purity or not? Answer: They obtain the name 'pure,' but are not truly pure. For example, a holy person who has left home is called a bhikṣu because he has slain the thieves of defilement. Ordinary people who have left home, whether keeping the precepts or breaking the precepts, are all called bhikṣus. Again, it is like an anointed prince who, when newly born, possesses the thirty-two marks and is already the owner of the seven treasures. Although he is not yet able to carry out the affairs of a wheel-turning king, he is still called a wheel-turning king, because he will certainly become a wheel-turning king. Those humans and devas are also like this: they all enter the Mahāyāna group of correct determination and will ultimately attain the pure Dharma body. Because they will attain it, they obtain the name 'pure.'
