2.125

Sentient beings are the substance of individual karmic retribution, while the land is the function of shared karmic retribution. Substance and function are not one; therefore 'one should know.' However, all dharmas are created by the mind and there is no external realm beyond it. Sentient beings and the vessel again can neither be different nor be one. If they are not one, their meanings are distinguished; if they are not different, they are identical in purity. 'Vessel' means function; it means that that pure land is that which is experienced and used by those pure sentient beings, and is therefore called a vessel. Just as when pure food is placed in an impure vessel, the food also becomes impure because the vessel is impure; and when impure food is placed in a pure vessel, the vessel also becomes impure because the food is impure. Both must be clean for it to be termed pure. For this reason, the single name 'purity' necessarily subsumes both kinds.
