A diligent mind during the day is the antidote to sleep arising from food. Not abandoning practice at night is the antidote to sleep arising from the seasons. Not passing [time] in vain generally concludes the above two, both taking vigorous diligence as the active antidote. The Dazhidu lun says: "Sleep is like great darkness without sight, daily deceiving people and robbing them of clarity." Therefore, when Zai Yu slept during the day, Confucius left behind the reprimand of rotten wood; when Aniruddha dozed off, the Capable of Benevolence gave rise to the ridicule of clams. Sleep's abandoning study and hindering the path—its grounds are grave indeed!
