The two characters can (shame) and chi (conscience) are explained together according to the sūtras and treatises. The Nirvāṇa says: "Can is to feel inwardly ashamed"; the Yogācāra says: "Inwardly generating shame is can." One should know that once one harbors shame and conscience, one urges on the three karmas with diligence, having no leisure to rest at ease, and is able to cultivate the three trainings and swiftly ascend to the ranks of worthies and noble ones; hence it is said here that the adornment of precepts and concentration is foremost. And it can restrain transgressions, like a hook controlling an elephant.
