Wang Rong with ivory tallies constantly calculated his estate; Yan Yuan in a lowly alley did not alter his joy. Now, one who is not content regrets that rare treasures are not plentiful, disdains lands and fields as not extensive, and despises roofbeams and eaves as not magnificent; in all undertakings their mind is constantly deficient—if not poor, what are they? A person of contentment, though wearing coarse hemp, enjoys the warmth of fox and badger fur; though eating goosefoot and bean leaves, enjoys the delicacy of rich meats and fine grain; though dwelling in a thatched hut, enjoys the peace of a spacious mansion. Why is this so? It is because of contentment. The Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] says, “Contentment is the foremost joy”; does it not mean this?
