"Grasped great elements [...] not designated as sentient": this is the specific explanation, which can be known from the text. Question: This treatise states that sound designated as sentient refers to vocal communicative karma; why does the Nyāyānusāra, fascicle 1, state: "This vocal communicative karma is again of two kinds: namely, that arisen depending on nominal designators and that arisen without relying on nominal designators. That arisen depending on nominal designators is again of two kinds: first, determined, and second, undetermined. The same applies to the two kinds that do not rely on nominal designators"? Conforming to that treatise's text, there is vocal communicative karma that is not conjoined with nominal designators; how can one say that sound designated as sentient refers to vocal communicative karma? Explanation: It only says that sound designated as sentient is vocal communicative karma, not that all vocal communicative karma is designated as sentient. If there is vocal communication that is not conjoined with nominal designators, that is sound designated as non-sentient; arisen depending on nominal designators means having expressive designation; arisen without relying on nominal designators refers to sounds of anger, laughter, etc. Therefore there is no contradiction. Another question: Is speech in all cases karma? Explanation: What is within the mouth is speech and also karma; what has exited the mouth is speech and not karma. Therefore the Nyāyānusāra, fascicle 60, in explaining the wind that issues speech, states: "While abiding inside the mouth, it is called speech and also karma; when flowing out to the exterior, it is only called speech." Moreover, by this text it can also be proven that there is sound separated from the physical substance.
