'Because he is able to shatter darkness, he is said to have destroyed darkness': this resolves an implicit objection. The intent of the implicit objection is: The word 'whoever' is general; how can it designate the Buddha? Therefore, it is resolved here by saying: This Buddha, the World-Honoured One, through wisdom is able to shatter the two kinds of darkness, and is therefore called the World-Honoured One. Both types of darkness are destroyed; because the two kinds of darkness are destroyed by the Buddha, the World-Honoured One, the word 'whoever', though general, ultimately denotes the World-Honoured One. Another explanation: This passage separately demonstrates the person capable of shattering darkness: this Buddha has the power to destroy all darkness forever, and therefore the World-Honoured One is said to have 'destroyed darkness'.
