'The commentary states: [...] only thereafter extending homage': in the prose commentary, first, the overall intent of the verse is generally marked; second, the verse text is separately explained. This is the general marking. Desiring now to compose the Abhidharmakośa-śāstra, although the treatise master summons the person by means of virtue, his underlying intent is to demonstrate that his own teacher, Śākyamuni, possesses a nature of virtue that is exalted and supreme, transcending all the noble assemblies of the two vehicles and bodhisattvas; therefore, he first praises virtues and only thereafter extends homage. Alternatively, as for 'noble assemblies', the various non-Buddhists and others consider themselves to be noble assemblies. As for 'what is indicated by the word "whoever" refers to the Buddha, the World-Honoured One': from here downward is the separate explanation. Because one summons the person by means of virtue, and other persons lack this virtue, although the word 'whoever' is general, it ultimately refers to the World-Honoured One.
