"One's own body is called internal ... or determined according to the bases": the gate of internal and external. What is possessed by one's own body is called internal; what is not possessed, as well as other bodies and inanimate things, are called external. Therefore the *Saṅgītiparyāya-śāstra*, fascicle 11, says: "What is internal matter? Answer: If matter is in this continuum, already attained and not lost, this is called internal matter. What is external matter? Answer: If matter is in this continuum, but either originally not attained, or attained and then lost, or in another continuum, or inanimate, this is called external matter (above is the treatise text)." Or "according to the bases": "bases" means the twelve bases. The five sense-bases are called internal, and the six sense-objects are called external matter.
