"Having resistance is called coarse ... the truths of suffering and origin, and so forth": the gate of coarse and subtle. The five sense-bases and five sense-objects, having resistance, are called coarse; unmanifest [matter], having no resistance, is called subtle. Or they are established relatively, that is, according to the three such as having visibility, etc., or according to the three such as the desire realm, etc. The *Saṅgītiparyāya* says: or relative to the three kinds of matter—visible and with resistance, invisible and with resistance, invisible and without resistance—the former is coarse and the latter is subtle. Or relative to the three kinds of matter—of the desire realm, of the form realm, and unattached [to realms]—the former is coarse and the latter is subtle.
