"Some say that the word dhātu ... is called the eighteen dhātus": the second master explains it in terms of distinctions. Lineage (gotra) means category of kind, just as in the world the classes of kṣatriyas and so on are distinct kinds. In this way, there are eighteen dharmas in a single body, each distinct in category, which are called the eighteen dhātus. Or it may be that this master offers a separate explanation of dhātu as category, differing from the verse. The Nyāyānusāra objects: "If so, the mind dhātu (mano-dhātu), having no distinct entity or category compared to the six consciousnesses, should not be a separate dhātu." This objection is invalid, because the based and the basing differ in entity and category, or, as some say, because their established temporal divisions are distinct. This is elaborated as in that text.
