"Because it is the root of the arising of mind and mental factors" resolves [the objection]. Although the unconditioned does not generate mind and mental factors as a homogeneous cause, because it generates mind and mental factors as an intentional object (viṣaya), it is also called a root of origination. The Nyāyānusāra refutes this, saying: "If so, the meanings of āyatana and dhātu would conflate, because both would mean being the root of the arising of mind and mental factors." If the master of the Kośa were to defend this, he would say: First, being the root of origination as a homogeneous cause applies to the whole of seventeen dhātus and a small part of one dhātu. Second, being the root of origination as an objective condition applies to a small part of one dhātu, namely the unconditioned. Because [the definition] is stated according to the predominant portion, the meaning of āyatana is distinct, and a slight conflation in a minor part incurs no error.
