"The treatise states ... will be explained next in order": The roots of dispute are twofold: householders greedily cling to sensual pleasures, while renunciants greedily cling to views. To these two, desires and views, sensation and ideation respectively serve as the predominant causes: through the power of savoring sensation, they greedily cling to sensual desires; through the power of inverted ideation, they greedily cling to views. Afflictions are called dispute; dispute itself is the root, or they serve as the root for dispute. Dharmas of birth-and-death refer to the dharmas of birth-and-death in the three realms: because of indulging in pleasurable sensations and giving rise to inverted ideations, one transmigrates in birth-and-death. Therefore, sensation and ideation are the most prominent causes. Due to these causes of the roots of dispute, causes of birth-and-death, and the cause of the sequence of the five skandhas to be explained in the subsequent verse, sensation and ideation are separately established.
