“If they lack the distinctive conceptual names of the eye and the other nine, yet their substance is form, they are collectively established with the name rūpa-āyatana.” This rūpa-āyatana is distinguished by the nine names of eye and so on; although marked with a general title, it is indeed a specific name. Just as many horses with multiple owners belong to the same herd, each having a distinctive brand: if one owner has no brand, then by lacking a brand it is distinguished from those that have brands. This is also like that; therefore it says that the general is indeed a specific name. There might be a question: Why do the other nine not establish the general name, and only [this one] is designated rūpa-āyatana? Therefore it now resolves this by saying: Furthermore, among all ten forms, the rūpa-āyatana is the most preeminent; therefore it is also established with the general name. First, because it possesses resistance; second, because it possesses visibility; third, because it is commonly spoken of as form; possessing these three meanings, it is preeminently established with the general name. Alternatively, the statement “possesses resistance” excludes unrevealing form (avijñapti-rūpa); “possesses visibility” and “commonly spoken of” exclude the eye and the other nine.
