Regarding 'Only the Buddha, the World-Honoured One ... hence it is called cessation': this explains the meaning of 'cessation'. 'Only' excludes the two vehicles. 'Attainment' refers to acquisition. 'Not falling back' refers to permanent counteraction. There are two kinds of counteraction: first, the noble path; second, awakening as it truly is. 'All spheres' refers to the four truths and the path of cultivation. 'All modes' refers to all varieties. Darkness is of two kinds: defiled and non-defiled. Non-arising is also of two kinds: first, cessation through deliberation; second, cessation not through deliberation. Because the unconditioned essence is eternal, it is called 'non-arising'. Only the Buddha, the World-Honoured One, having obtained the noble path of permanent counteraction, realizes the unarisen dharma of cessation through deliberation with respect to the defiled darkness regarding all principles and empirical spheres; therefore it is called 'cessation'. Because he has obtained permanent counteraction through awakening as it truly is, he realizes the unarisen dharma of cessation not through deliberation with respect to all varieties of non-defiled darkness; therefore it is called 'cessation'.
