"If [mental exploration] belongs solely to the mental stage... up to 'as fully explained in the sūtra'": this cites a sūtra to raise an objection. Since the sūtra states, "Having seen a visible form with the eye, one gives rise to an exploration of gladness toward forms that accord with gladness, one gives rise to an exploration of grief toward forms that accord with grief, and one gives rise to an exploration of equanimity toward forms that accord with equanimity," and so forth, up to "having known a dharma with the mind, one gives rise to three explorations," we clearly know from this that they also extend to the five consciousnesses. Why then state that they are associated solely with the mind?
