Regarding 'Such material food [...] consumed piece by piece': The three—odor, taste, and tangibles bound solely to the desire realm—are all entirely the intrinsic nature of material food. The reason hunger and thirst, two tangibles, are called food is that they digest past food, seek new food, and manifest absence of illness. The reason it is called food is that it can be divided into portions and eaten or drunk. That is, the mouth can eat and drink; the nose can drink, as in the trunk of an elephant and the like. Because it is received portion by portion, it is called material food. This explains the name. Another explanation: when the mouth eats and drinks, the tongue faculty receives taste portion by portion; because the nose drinks, the nose faculty receives odor portion by portion; as for the tangibles in the mouth and nose, the body faculty receives tangibles portion by portion.
