Regarding "Although it is said that the death-existence ... but lacks retributional": this explains the sixth pāda. Although it is said that the death-existence can possess minds of the three moral natures, entering nirvāṇa occurs exclusively with two indeterminate [minds]: retributional and deportment. Because there are no afflictions, there is definitely no defiled mind. Although there are wholesome minds, [and minds of] crafts and supernormal fruits, because they are strong and prominent one does not enter nirvāṇa [with them]; hence entering nirvāṇa occurs only with two indeterminate minds. If one says that below the third dhyāna there is an indeterminate feeling of indifference born of retribution, then that theory holds that the mind entering nirvāṇa in the desire realm possesses both indeterminate minds. If one says that below the third dhyāna there is no indeterminate feeling of indifference born of retribution, then that theory holds that the mind entering nirvāṇa in the desire realm has only deportment but lacks retributional [mind]. Between the two views, the first view is correct. Just as among the twenty minds arising mutually, the mind born of retribution in the desire realm can give rise to a defiled mind of the upper two realms, which means that the mind born of retribution in the desire realm ends life associated with the feeling of indifference, and takes rebirth with a defiled mind in the upper two realms, because the mind that takes rebirth and ends life is definitely [associated with] the feeling of indifference. By this it is clearly known that the desire realm definitely has retribution with the feeling of indifference. Furthermore, the lower text of this treatise says: "Some say it also exists below, as retribution is brought about by the intermediate; moreover, these three karmas are admitted not to ripen sequentially." Furthermore, in the *Mahāvibhāṣā*'s discussion of the cause of retribution, there is also a passage stating that the lower stages have retribution with indifference. It cannot be quoted in full. Therefore it is known that the view holding that retribution with indifference exists below the third dhyāna is correct.
