Regarding "Moreover, in those who die gradually ... it receives the name of 'severance'": this explains the tenth pāda. In those who die suddenly, there is no severing of the marman; only in those who die gradually is there severing of the marman. The marman is a fatal spot in the body, extremely small in size, which causes death upon touch. Therefore the *Nyāyānusāra* cites a verse: "There is a special spot in the body / which causes life to end when touched, / like the stamen of a blue lotus / touched by a speck of dust (end of treatise citation)." Another explanation: In the Abhidharmakośa it is said: In the bodies of sentient beings there are one hundred spots called marmans, which cause death when touched. What is called "severance" here is not like cutting firewood into two pieces, which is named severance; rather, when the water [element] and so forth increase, they sever these marmans. Just as someone whose head has been severed has no perception, it receives the name of severance; it is not called severance because of being split into two pieces. The rest of the text can be understood.
