[On the Kośa's statement:] "Other teachers say: [... therefore they are designated by the appellation 'name']": this is the fourth explanation. The four non-material aggregates, having abandoned this body, change and proceed to subsequent places of rebirth in the future; their changing and proceeding is like a name, and therefore they are designated by the appellation "name". Although the four untainted aggregates do not take rebirth, because they belong to this category, their inclusion under "name" is without fault. The first explanation explains changing in terms of changing objects; the latter explanation explains changing in terms of changing rebirths. Although the meanings differ, both explain "name" in terms of changing and bending (nam-). Furthermore, the Nyāyānusāra, fascicle 29, says: "The Buddha taught that the four non-material aggregates are called 'name'. Why are they called 'name'? Because they are capable of indicating and summoning. That is, they can indicate and summon various objects. If so, they should not entirely subsume non-material [phenomena], for non-associated phenomena have no object. It is not so: indicating and summoning applies only to non-material phenomena, just as there is no fault in what was stated in explaining the designation of form. The Buddha said that 'form' is named because of mutability and resistance. Past, future, non-informative matter, and subtle atoms, though lacking mutability and resistance, still obtain the name 'form'; because among non-material phenomena there is no mutability and resistance, the designation of form through mutability and resistance is not unestablished. In the same way, among non-material phenomena there is room for indicating and summoning, whereas in material phenomena there is none; therefore, in principle, there is also no contradiction. Hence, the inclusion of non-associated formations under 'name' is without fault." There are three further explanations, which cannot be recounted in detail.
