Regarding the passage from "Former ancient masters explained" to "it appears with fullness and waning": Former ancient masters in the Sautrāntika school explained that the paths and degrees of motion of the sun and moon differ; moving on this path, it should be seen as round; moving on that path, it should be seen as waning. Another explanation: The solar disk is swift, and the lunar disk is slow; their degrees of motion differ. The sunlight is blazing, while the moonlight is dim and weak. When the sun gradually approaches the moon, the sun shines upon the lunar disk, overpowering it so that it is not visible. If they are extremely close, it is completely overpowered and entirely invisible. If they gradually draw apart, it only then gradually becomes visible. Later, when it is not illuminated, its full substance appears. Its being overpowered and invisible is not due to being covered by a shadow.
