"Having thus explained [the differences in bodily and spatial measurements of the receptacle world] by way of the yojana and so forth... up to: the three minimal measures": Below this is the third major division of text, which explains the three limits: first, it explains the three minimal [measures]; second, it explains the measures of the preceding two. Below this, the first part explains the three minimal measures. "Having thus explained the differences in bodily and spatial measurements of the receptacle world by way of the yojana and so forth" explains measure by way of matter (rūpa). "And having explained the distinctions in life-span by way of the year and so forth" explains measure by way of time (kāla). The differences between the two measures of matter and time have not yet been stated and should be stated. The establishment of these two different distinctions is entirely dependent upon name (nāma). The minimal measures of the preceding two measures and of name have not yet been examined in detail; hence, "now we should first distinguish the three minimal measures," concluding the preceding and posing the question to introduce [the next topic]. Another explanation: The differences between the two measures have not yet been stated and should be stated; this generally introduces what follows. From "The establishment of these two..." downward, the verses are specifically introduced.
