On "If karma operates through the bodily door ... it should be known that the same holds true": The Sautrāntika answers: If karma operates through the door of the body, arising with bodily communication as its cognitive object, it is called bodily karma; verbal karma is explained accordingly. The rest, different from this, functions together with the mind; arising based on the mental sphere, it is called operating through the mental door. Although operating through the other two doors is also based on the mind, because they are based on distinct aspects, distinct names are established. This [mental karma] receives the general designation, using the general for the specific, as with the visible sense field and the like. Fully stated, they should be called karma based on the body, karma based on speech, and karma based on the mind. For the Sautrāntika, all three karmas have intention as their essential nature.
