"Furthermore, that which the sūtra states ... the continuous arising of meritorious karma" refutes the third proof below. Regarding the increase of merit, the ancient masters of the Sautrāntika explain: through the inherent power of the nature of things, the perfumed seeds bring about the increase of meritorious karma. That the donors are manifold is expressed by 'as ... as', and that the recipients are manifold is expressed by 'so ... so'. Because the various recipients consume the given items, they are able to cultivate virtues such as benevolence and bring benefit to body and mind, resulting in differences in the strength and vigor of their bodies and minds. Another explanation: because the various recipients consume the given items, they attain various virtues such as the samādhi of benevolence, resulting in differences in their gathering and benefiting of sentient beings. Subsequently, even if evil or indeterminate alien conditions arise in the donor's mind, the seed perfumed by the earlier volition regarding the gift resides within the donor's physical continuum; its active aspect is subtle, continuous, and unbroken, and later it gradually undergoes transformation to directly produce a fruit, its efficacy being superior to before and arising with distinctions. These five are all synonyms for the seed. Because this seed of volition can in the future induce multiple fruits such as wealth, it was spoken with esoteric intention that the seed perfumed by volition is constantly continuous, that meritorious karma gradually increases, and that meritorious karma continuously arises—it was not an explicit statement.
