"Other masters say... because it is divided into two" recounts a divergent view. This master's meaning is: abstaining from eating at improper times is the primary substance of fasting (upavāsa); according to the custom of the western countries, abstaining from food is called fasting. The remaining eight types are not called fasting because they lack the meaning of fasting; they are merely called limbs of fasting. Dividing them into two is readily understood. According to this explanation, there are nine precepts. When it is said there are eight precepts, it is not said on the basis of substance, but only discussed in terms of limbs. Question: Are the Sanskrit names for fasting (upavāsa) and abiding near (upavāsa) the same? The answer: Since the text explains them separately, clearly they are not the same. Another explanation: The Sanskrit name is *upavāsa*, which is translated either as fasting or as abiding near; the names differ, but the meaning is the same.
