"The masters of the Vibhāṣā... is not dhyāna" recounts the explanation of the Vaibhāṣika masters. What is called fasting means abstaining from eating at improper times; thus abstaining from eating at improper times is fasting. Fasting is also one of the eight, hence it is a limb of fasting. The remaining seven limbs are each one of the eight, hence they are limbs of fasting; but they are not abstaining from eating at improper times, so they are not called fasting. Just as right view and the path both have prajñā as their substance, one can say right view is the path; and because it is one of the eight, one can say it is a limb of the path. The other seven limbs are each one of the eight, so they are limbs of the path; but because their substance is not prajñā, they are not the path. Investigation of dharmas (dharma-pravicaya) and awakening (bodhi) both have prajñā as their substance, so one can say investigation of dharmas is awakening; and because it is one of the seven, one can say it is a limb of awakening. The other six limbs are each one of the seven, so they are limbs of awakening; but because their substance is not prajñā, they are not awakening. Just as among the limbs of dhyāna, samādhi and dhyāna both have meditative concentration as their substance, one can say samādhi is dhyāna; and because it is one of the five and so forth, it is a limb of dhyāna. The other factors, such as vitarka and vicāra, are each one of the five and so forth, so they are limbs of dhyāna; but because their substance is not concentration, they are not dhyāna.
