"Generally designating the name of fasting... should be known to be the same" is the Sautrāntika reply. Fasting has no separate substance; it is formed by gathering the eight together. The whole is fasting, while the parts are called limbs. Just as a chariot is a whole formed by gathering many parts, or an army is a whole formed by gathering the four limbs of elephants, cavalry, chariots, and infantry, and just as a medicinal powder is formed by gathering five herbal ingredients. Since chariots, armies, powders, and so forth are conceptual designations, the eight limbs of the fasting precept should be understood as likewise. Formed by gathering the eight to make fasting, fasting is also a conceptual designation, unlike the worldly view where merely not eating is called fasting.
