「若爾應與此經相違」者，外國師難。若要須發五戒律儀方名近事，是則應與此《大名經》相違。彼經說受三歸等已，但云齊是名曰鄔波索迦，不言發戒方名近事。

"If so, it would contradict this sūtra" is an objection by the foreign masters: If one must give rise to the restraint of the five precepts before being called an upāsaka, then this would contradict the *Mahānāma-sūtra*. That sūtra, having described taking the three refuges and so forth, merely states: "To this extent one is called an upāsaka"; it does not say that only upon giving rise to the precepts does one become an upāsaka.
