Regarding "If so, why did the World-Honoured One... what is their intrinsic nature?": from here down is the third [section], reconciling the two disciplines mentioned in the sūtras, posing a question based on scripture. If only bodily and vocal [actions] are called discipline, why did the World-Honoured One, in stating the summary discipline, designate all three—body, speech, and mind—as discipline and praise them as excellent? In speaking of all-encompassing discipline, all three kinds are spoken of collectively. Furthermore, why does the sūtra also speak of the discipline of the eye faculty? The former sūtra spoke of the mental discipline, and the latter sūtra spoke of the eye faculty's discipline; what is their intrinsic nature?
