14.82

「謂諸行增語至立晝夜名」者，答。增語謂名，如前釋。能詮諸行增語是名，光位立晝名，闇位立夜名。又解：時無別體，諸行名時，謂增語所顯。諸行名時，應言增語所顯諸行。故《婆沙》一百三十五云「答：此增語所顯半月月時年。」又解：諸行答所詮時，增語答能詮名。

"It refers to the designation (adhivacana) of conditioned factors [up to:] establishes the names 'day' and 'night'" is the answer. "Designation" refers to name, as previously explained. The expressing designation of conditioned factors is the name; in the phase of light the name "day" is established, and in the phase of darkness the name "night" is established. Another explanation: Time has no separate substance; conditioned factors are called time, meaning what is indicated by designation. Conditioned factors being called time should mean conditioned factors indicated by designation. Hence Mahāvibhāṣā 135 says: "Answer: A half-month, month, season, and year are indicated by this designation." Another explanation: Conditioned factors answer for the expressed time, and designation answers for the expressing name.
