"Between the two limits [up to:] does it not also arise?" is a question by the Sautrāntikas. Between the two limits, "for the duration of life" may be granted. After life ends, although there was a resolute undertaking, precepts are not generated. Because of abandoning [them] through the end of life, and because the support-body is different, those precepts do not arise. Because within a different support-body there is no preparatory exertion seeking to receive the precepts, those precepts do not arise. Generally, after receiving precepts one must remember and know them; because in a different support-body there is no memory, it can be said that they are not generated. This concedes that in receiving for life, they are not generated across lifetimes. After one day and night, or during five days and nights, or ten days and nights and so forth, when receiving the upavāsa precepts, what dharma serves as an obstacle preventing the precepts from arising? The Sautrāntikas hold that the upavāsa precepts can be received for multiple days, and therefore ask this question.
